F8 Photography Workshops in Asia

Featuring Michael Yamashita, David Alan Harvey, Ira Block

19th – 22nd November, 2009

More than a dozen students came together in Bangkok for a once-in-a-lifetime photography workshop November 19th-22nd. Three of the greatest photographers from National Geographic, and three of the most experienced workshop instructors: David Alan Harvey, Ira Block and Michael Yamashita, ran an intensive four-day workshop in Thailand’s capitol for photographers of all levels.

Each afternoon the group would head out to shoot different subjects around the city, from ancient Buddhist temples to boxing gyms. And each morning, the class would gather for a critique designed to improve their techniques and to discuss photography techniques that would improve their way of “seeing” pictures. David, Ira and Mike all gave a lot of input, often disagreeing—but more often agreeing—on what the students needed to do to improve their work. It was a rare opportunity to see and hear from three photographers with distinct styles.

The final workshop show was a compilation of the student’s best work, a photographic essay of Bangkok and how the students “pictured” it. In the end, it was an intensive—and rewarding--photographic learning experience not likely to be repeated.

We’re looking to run this workshop, in Bangkok, once a year, featuring different top-name photographers from Magnum and National Geographic. Please have a look at F8 Workshops for more workshops like this.
